Show on student life, activities after WWII

THEY file into their school hall weekly but, until recently, had little feeling for it.

Thanks to a history project, Chung Cheng High (Main) Secondary 2 students Yu An Qi, Joshua Chua, Hannah Tjoa and Caleb Tay, all 14, now have a deeper appreciation of the auditorium.

Delving into old school magazines and interviewing former students for a sense of what student life was like after World War II, they learnt about the hard work the former students put in to build the auditorium.

They organised concerts to raise money for the auditorium without complaining that they would not be able to use it themselves, said An Qi.

The information will be on show at an exhibition on student activities of that period, opening today at the Singapore Management University.

Students from CHIJ St Nicholas' Girls, Raffles' Institution, Raffles' Girls Secondary, Singapore Chinese Girls', St Margaret's Secondary and Xinmin Secondary schools will also display their projects.

The project to get students interested in history was organised by the bilingual civil society group, The Tangent.

The exhibition, Education At Large - Student Life And Activities In Singapore 1945-1965, is on until Dec 9.

It will be open from noon to 8pm daily at The Gallery of SMU's school of economics and social sciences.

A forum will also be held today from 2.30pm to 5.30pm at Conference Hall 1 of the university administration building.
